The Science Behind Your FR Clothing

Have you ever wondered how protective flame resistant (FR) fabrics resist catching fire? We have your answers.

When a flame, spark or intense heat reaches a flammable substance, a chemical reaction occurs that produces heat and light. This reaction, termed “combustion,” is the basis of fire. Have you ever wondered how protective flame resistant (FR) fabrics resist catching fire?

Arc flash, flash fire and combustible dust hazards are commonplace in many industrial settings, including the oil and gas and electric industries. Daily wear FR personal protective equipment (PPE) helps provide a final safeguard to those who may experience these short-term thermal hazards. Yet, to provide this critical protection, PPE must harness the science behind fire and FR fabrics.


To develop effective FR fabrics, textile manufacturers must first have a deep understanding of the science of fire. Manufacturers have developed different technologies to create FR textiles, each with their own merits. To help you understand how these approaches work to snuff out a flame, we explain the various technologies, explore their advantages and drawbacks, and provide some insight into how they work to provide flame resistance.

What is Fire?

We generally think of fire as requiring three separate components: oxygen, heat and fuel. Heat is required to break down the fuel in gaseous components, and then oxygen reacts with the gas that is formed. The heat produced then breaks down more fuel into gases, and this cycle continues until one of the three components—oxygen, heat or fuel—is removed or consumed.

However, the chemical reaction that results in combustion is actually very complex and requires another component that we cannot observe. In order to react with oxygen, the fuel must break apart into highly reactive molecules called “radicals”. These radicals react with oxygen and form more radicals in a chain reaction that results in fire. Therefore, scientifically, fire requires four components: fuel, oxygen, heat and this chain reaction.

The Science of Flame Resistance

By using a deep scientific understanding of fire, fabric manufacturers have developed strategies for flame resistance that are focused on removing one of the components required to sustain the fire. All of these technologies are designed to snuff out a flame and mitigate the risk of injury for the wearer, but each of them has their own set of advantages. Since each of the technologies can be made permanent for the life of the protective garment and will not wash out with laundering, the selection of the technology will depend on the specific hazard and the preference for other attributes.

What Does “Flame-Resistant” Mean? 

Flame-resistant is a characteristic of a fabric or garment to resist ignition and to self-extinguish if ignited. Generally, such garments are made from cloth woven from fibers that are inherently resistant to fire. 

What Does “Flame-Retardant” Mean? 

Flame retardants are chemical substances used to impart flame resistance to a garment. Some flame-resistant garments are made from fabrics that have been treated with chemicals that enable them to extinguish flames or sparks when exposed to them. Over time, these chemicals will be washed out of the clothing rendering them ineffective in providing protection without reapplication of chemicals.

What Is the Difference Between Flame-Resistant and Flame-Retardant Garments? 

The first difference between flame-resistant and flame-retardant garments lies in the items’ production. Flame-resistant fabrics are made of fibers that naturally resist burning when exposed to flames, whereas flame-retardant fabrics are treated with chemicals to make them resistant to fire, essentially extinguishing any flame that strikes them. 

Another difference between garments in these two categories is cost. Typically, flame-resistant garments are slightly more expensive than flame-retardant garments, but they may require less frequent replacement. 

How Long Do Flame-Retardant & Flame-Resistant Garments Protect Against Fire?

How long the garment protects the wearer from continual exposure to fire depends on the level of protection provided. You must consider the circumstances your employees typically work in.

The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) offers a guide to understanding the differences between differently classified flame-resistant and flame-retardant garments to assist employers in protecting industrial personnel from short-term exposure to fire. These hazard risk categories are ranked from Category 1 to Category 4. The higher the category, the more protection is offered for a longer period of time. In most cases, low-hazard tasks require only a Category 1- or Category 2-level of protection. 

Are All Uniforms Available in Flame-Resistant or Flame-Retardant Fabrics? 

In most cases, uniforms can be made to the specifications of the business. Flame-resistant thread can be used for details like embroidered logos and name tags. This means that even these small sections of the uniform are resistant to fire. 

If there is a concern that parts of the body need more protection than others or that fire protection is required only for specific tasks, it is possible to choose PPE that addresses just these issues. For example, shoulder-length gloves can be used for fire protection for certain tasks, and aprons add an extra layer of protection to the lower half of the body. 

In many cases, when a work task exposes some employees but not all to open flames or very hot equipment, all employees wear flame-resistant or flame-retardant uniforms. Employees who deal directly with the open flames or hot items wear higher classes of flame-resistant PPE for further protection. This ensures that everyone has at least some degree of protection, and the safety and protection level is scaled to more specific tasks.

Are Flame-Retardant or Flame-Resistant Uniforms a Better Choice? 

Because flame-resistant uniforms last a bit longer than flame-retardant uniforms, they are more expensive. But that doesn’t always mean they are the better choice overall.
