The Pros and Cons of Die Casting | OneMonroe - Monroe Engineering

From cylinder heads and engine blocks to garden furniture and bicycle frames, die casting is used to create a wide variety of products. It involves the use of pressurized molten metal to fill a mold cavity. The raw metal is heated, after which it’s forced into a mold cavity. After the molten metal has cooled and solidified, the newly created casting is ejected. While die casting is a versatile casting process, though, it offers both advantages and disadvantages for manufacturing companies.

Please visit our website for more information on this topic.

Die Casting Pros

Die casting supports many different metals and alloys. Zinc is a popular choice for this casting process because of its high ductility and equally high strength. It’s also relatively inexpensive, making it ideal for large-scale manufacturing applications. Other metals and alloys supported by die casting include aluminum, magnesium, copper, lead and tin.

Manufacturing companies don’t have to worry about rough or rigid casting surfaces with die casting. Since it involves pressurized molten metal, it’s able to create super-smooth surfaces on castings. As the molten metal is forced into the mold cavity, it completely fills the otherwise voided space to ensure a smooth surface.

Another benefit of die casting is its ability to minimize the need for finishing operations. With other types of casting processes, castings are often finished using a machine. These secondary machining operations can be time-consuming and cumbersome. The good news is that die casting reduces the need for such operations. In many cases, castings are ready to be shipped immediately after this casting process.

Die Casting Cons

On the other hand, die casting is somewhat expensive when compared to other casting processes. It requires a special type of casting machine that’s expensive to purchase as well as maintain. Manufacturing companies can save money by choosing zinc as the casting material, but die casting is still a relatively expensive casting process.

Die casting also has weight specifications to which the castings must adhere. For instance, a typical casting may require a weight of 1 ounce to 15 pounds. If the casting weighs more or less, it suffer from defect.

Reasons for Buying from Kinetic Die Casting Company

Three of the Most Popular Die Casting Alloys. Aluminum is the most accepted out of all die casting alloys. Besides its lightweight features and its sturdy ability, aluminum is also found to be very inexpensive measured up to other die casting alloys. When choosing the ideal material to utilize in die casting, it is vital to have concise information as to how each alloy is different from one another. Although aluminum may have a lot of benefits and advantages compared to other materials, some die casting companies also prefer not to use aluminum owing to its high shrinkage capability and also its receptivity to high temperature.

Copper is one of the various other die casting alloys like zinc die casting available in the scientific procedure. One of the advantages of employ copper is its inflexibility and its ability to decrease ductility. Copper is also identified not be receptacle to corrosion, generating an outstanding substitute to aluminum. On the other hand, if you are looking for a type of alloy that is able to work on narrower walls compared to the effectiveness of aluminum, you can also use Zinc as an alternative. Zinc has the capability to close tolerances because of its fluidic nature that is highly influenced by high temperatures. When die casters decided Zinc as its die casting alloy, the casting is processed at a lower temperature than usual so as not to completely melt the die. As soon as the die is shaped, it is much easier for die casters to permit the result to solidify due to the material’s sensitivity towards temperature.

Drumheller Industries
Tuxford Street
Sun Valley, California

Kinetic Die Casting Company bought Die Casting Tooling at the Drumheller Industries auction on Tuesday September 12, . Much of the zinc die casting tooling were unit die holders to fit small die casting tooling inserts.

Drumheller Industries, located at Tuxford Street in Sun Valley CA. , made zinc die casting parts for several years. Drumheller Industries sold die cast unit die inserts to their customers as die casting molds but not the die casting holders.

These Drumheller customers will need to use the holders that we purchased to save them money on set up fees on their next production run of zinc die casting parts. The Drumheller inserts and many of their zinc die casting tools fit in our new unit die mold bases. In some cases, these die casting tools can be modified to fit other inserts.

Sadly, the Drumheller customers were given a only few days notice to pick of their die casting molds or insert tools before they closed their doors permanently before the auction. We here at Kinetic Die Casting Company are sad that another manufacturer with a long history in California closed their doors. It is hard to believe that so many manufacturers in California are facing problems that are forcing them to close their doors.

Kinetic Die Casting Company is glad to offer assistance to the manufacturing customers that were doing business at Drumheller Industries. In many cases we can save these manufacturing companies money by using the same mold bases and trim dies that were sold at the Drumheller auction.

The Environment and Aluminum Die Castings. In our Earth’s crust, aluminum is the most abundant (8.3% by weight) metallic element and the third most abundant of all elements (after oxygen and silicon).

Kinetic Die Casting Company produces parts using aluminum. Aluminum is theoretically 100% recyclable without any loss of its natural qualities. The global per capita stock of aluminum in use in society (i.e. in cars, buildings, electronics etc.) is 80 kg. Much of this is in more-developed countries (350–500 kg per capita) rather than less-developed countries (35 kg per capita). Knowing the per capita stocks and their approximate lifespan is important for planned recycling.

Other manufacturing materials, such as steel and plastic, can not be recycled or have limited recycle ability. These materials fill our landfills and break down very slowly. Many plastic materials appear as if they will last forever in our landfills.

Recovery of aluminum via recycling has become an important facet of the aluminum industry. Recycling involves melting the scrap, a process that requires only 5% of the energy used to produce aluminum from ore, though a significant part (up to 15% of the input material) is lost as dross (ash-like oxide). The dross can undergo a further process to extract aluminum.

Recycled aluminum is known as secondary aluminum, but maintains the same physical properties as primary aluminum. Secondary aluminum is produced in a wide range of formats and is employed in 80% of aluminum alloy castings.

The aluminum die castings manufactured by Kinetic Die Casting Company are made from 100% recycled aluminum that has been alloyed into the proper aluminum alloy that our customers specify. Typically, A380, A360 or A413 aluminum alloys.

Contact Kinetic Die Casting Company today and get a price for your 100% recycled aluminum parts. Buy 100 parts or 5,000 parts.
