Now that I am finished introducing the major pallet rack systems, we can move on to the different shelving systems. These storage systems are different than rack because they are generally used for smaller and non-palletized items that would be accessed by hand, not with machinery. However, rivet shelving is a very sturdy option if you are still looking for the right storage unit for your facility.

General Characteristics

Rivet shelving is very strong and quick to assemble. It is a great shelving choice for high density and bulk or heavy storage. Typically this system is made of a steel frame and some sort of decking, such as particle board or wire decks, to hold the load. The shelves are solid steel and are boltless and adjustable to allow you flexibility to store multiple product sizes. Different shelving and beam options are available as well depending on what you are stocking.

Layout Options

Because rivet shelving is for products that are accessed by hand, no machines, such as forklifts, need to be used. As a result, you don’t have to worry as much about the size of your aisles, besides complying with OSHA’s standards. Since the shelves don’t have closed in backs or sides, this system can be placed against a wall or be free-standing. It is pretty versatile since you can see and access the items from any side. Rivet shelving begins with starter units, and there are various add-on units to make your system larger. Using a Tee Post between the starter and add-on units works best to make the shelving the most strong and sturdy it can be.

Other Rivet Options

Rivet shelving also comes in different shelf types such as record storage and tire storage. Record storage is perfect for records management by providing a solution specifically for high density archive storage. You can get units with specially designed box supports, or use particle board to store the boxes. The tire storage rack is specially designed to store tires and are available in standard tire size, or deeper for larger SUV tires.

What you need to know before installing rivet shelving

The main thing you should know before ordering rivet shelving is the size of the products that will be stored on it. While this system is easily customizable and the shelves are able to move to accommodate changing inventory, there are a lot of different sizes and parts to start out with. Make sure you have a good idea of what you’ll be storing because there are different rivet capacities as well as different shelf sizes for each unit. There are also add-on units available to make your system bigger, but wider units should have a center support for bracing. The installation for rivet shelving is pretty simple, and doesn’t require many tools.

All in all, rivet shelving is a very strong and sturdy option for a storage system that is non-palletized, hand loaded inventory. If you need to store items that would commonly be accessed by hand, but are a bit bulkier or bigger, rivet would be a good bet. Learn more about rivet shelving, and other storage options.
